Sarah O'Brien

Registered Psychologist

   

Sarah is a registered psychologist who brings a lived experience and trauma-informed approach to her dedicated practice. She holds a Masters degree in counselling psychology as well as an honours degree with a specialization in psychology. In addition to her psychology degrees, Sarah also can call upon her experience and education as a nurse. 


Sarah has received specialized training in Trauma therapy which includes completed Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), from an EMDRIA certified practioner, and Trauma Treatment Certification Training (CCTP) with Dr. Janina Fisher. Sarah has attended additional training and certification in Anxiety disorder treatment including Panic Disorder, OCD, Social Anxiety and Phobias. Sarah is presently working towards her certification in EMDR and Somatic Experiencing (SE) therapy.

Sarah uses an integrative approach, incorporating evidence-based techniques such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, EMDR Therapy, Prolonged Exposure Therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy.
 

Sarah has several years of experience working with various clients from both community mental health organizations as well as private practice.  Her areas of specialty include stress management,  adult ADHD, life transitions, anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic illness and pain management, boundary setting, women’s issues, prenatal and post-partum mental health, communication, grief, self-esteem issues, and relationship concerns.
 

Sarah strives to create an affirming and judgement-free environment where her clients feel safe expressing their experiences as everyone deserves to be heard and witnessed for who they are. She provides practical guidance and support and incorporates humour and humility into her practice.



Sarah loves to travel, seeing new places, and returning to some of her favorites.  She enjoys a good comedy, especially Chris Farley, and loves horror movies.

  • 60+ hours of clinical practice seminars (CBT, DBT, Narrative Therapy) – Calgary Counselling Centre
